Mexico City, one of the largest and most vibrant metropolitan areas in the world, was originally founded as the grand Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan, a city ingeniously built on the waters of Lake Texcoco. Although much of its original architecture was destroyed during the Spanish conquest, the city still preserves fascinating remnants of its pre-Hispanic past: ancient canals, stone ruins, and archaeological sites.

Considered one of the best-preserved examples of Maya architecture, the ruins of Palenque lie deep within the dense jungle of the Mexican state of Chiapas. The city flourished between 500 and 700 A.D., after which it vanished into the tropical rainforest until its rediscovery in 1746. Spanning 15 square kilometers, the site is home to hundreds of fascinating temples and palaces built without the use of metal tools, wheels, or animals.

Often overlooked by travelers to the Yucatan Peninsula, peaceful Campeche offers a wealth of hidden treasures. Along its coastline, pristine and deserted beaches stretch for miles, while the vast Laguna de Términos serves as a protected haven for abundant birdlife and marine species. A day can easily be spent exploring its serene mangrove inlets. At the heart of it all lies the state capital, a beautifully preserved colonial city that exudes charm and elegance.

Located near the Gulf of Mexico and surrounded by charming Pueblos Mágicos, Mérida was built on the site of the ancient Maya city of T’ho. Many of the original pyramids were dismantled by the Spanish to construct the grand colonial buildings that still stand today. As the second-largest historic center in Mexico, it offers a vibrant cultural scene with museums, galleries and restaurants.

The small colonial city of Valladolid is one of Mexico’s designated Pueblos Mágicos, a title given to towns with exceptional natural beauty, cultural richness, or historical significance. Its narrow cobblestone streets are lined with charming, low-rise pastel-colored buildings and offer a variety of attractions that invite visitors to explore its unique character and vibrant heritage.

Stretching along the Caribbean coast of the Yucatán Peninsula, the Riviera Maya is one of Mexico’s most popular tourist regions. This stunning 130-kilometer stretch of coastline extends from the resort city of Cancún in the north to the ancient Maya ruins of Tulum in the south. The area is renowned for its long white-sand beaches lapped by the crystal-clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean Sea and is home to all-inclusive resorts as well as charming boutique hotels.
